South Washington County Schools Hybrid Learning Option

Hybrid Learning

Since June, South Washington County Schools (SoWashCo) has been planning for three different scenarios for the upcoming school year. On Thursday, July 30, Governor Tim Walz is expected to announce if Minnesota school districts will deliver education in-person, through distance learning or using a hybrid model.

SoWashCo planning teams have spent the summer working on the most complicated scenario – hybrid learning. In hybrid learning, students learn through a combination of distance learning at home and in-person learning at school five days a week with strict social distancing measures in place. School buildings would be limited to 50 percent capacity of students and staff at any one time.

Elementary students (grades K-5) will be divided into two groups (by family) to reduce class size. Each week students will alternate between attending school in-person three days and distance learning for two days for one week, then attending school in-person for two days and distance learning for three days the next week. Students will also have opportunities for real-time learning through a live virtual classroom and learning activities both on and off a district-issued device.

Middle and high school students (grades 6-12) will be divided into two groups (by family) to reduce class size. The typical six-day period will be split into a three-day period where students will take classes for periods 1-3 for the first half of trimester one and periods 4-6 the second half of trimester one. Student groups will attend school in-person for two days and distance learning for two days. One day a week will be reserved for:

  • Additional in-person learning opportunities such as exams, labs, small group learning
  • Additional distancing learning opportunities such as real-time learning or remote learning on a district-issued device
  • Advisory class
