Apply to be a Licensed Substitute Teacher
Posted on 01/13/2021
Substitute teachers are critical for an in-person learning model. The Professional Educator License and Standards Board (PELSB) offers a short call substitute teaching license that allows a candidate to substitute teach for up to 15 consecutive days per-assignment. The short call substitute teaching license is valid for three years.
To qualify, a candidate must meet one of the following criteria:
  • Hold a bachelor’s degree (or U.S. equivalent as verified by a foreign evaluation) in any field, as verified by an official transcript
  • Be enrolled in a teacher preparation program and have successfully completed student teaching with a final grade reflected on the candidate’s official transcript
  • For candidates in career and technical education (CTE) fields or career pathways, have one of the following:
    • Five years of relevant work experience aligned to a CTE licensure area
    • Hold an associate’s degree aligned to a CTE licensure area, as verified by an official transcript
    • Hold a board approved professional certification alighted to a CTE licensure area

Candidates who have never applied with PELSB can apply online here. Candidates who have previously held a license with PELSB can renew their license for a short-term substitute license using the renew licensure system.

Starting on Jan. 19, South Washington County Schools will be offering an incentive program for our substitute teachers. Click here to learn how you can earn $100 for each badge earned through our incentive program.
