MBDA 9-10 Honor Band performance Seven District 833 students recently participated in the prestigious Minnesota Band Directors’ Association (MBDA) 9-10 Grade All-State Honor Band at Shakopee High School. Students rehearsed on Saturday, April 6, and returned the next day for an additional rehearsal before performing the final concert in the afternoon. This concert, which featured four pieces of collegiate-level band repertoire, was free and open to the public.

“The concert demonstrates outstanding dedication when students are willing to give up 12 hours on a Saturday and several more hours on a Sunday to get together with a group of relative strangers from across the state and make music,” said Tark Katzenmeyer, Woodbury High School Band Director.

Of the seven District 833 students, two students are from East Ridge High School and five are from Woodbury High School. East Ridge students include Benjamin Sayers (alto saxophone) and Dylan Moreno (clarinet), and Woodbury High School students include Shona Acquaye (bassoon), Josh Lecuyer (bassoon), Evan Thornton (alto saxophone), Ellie Steffens (clarinet) and Drew Olson (tuba).

Students auditioned to participate in this selective ensemble by submitting scales and two etudes to a panel of judges. This honor band is an opportunity for selected musicians across the state to join together in the performance of quality concert band literature.

This year, over 400 students auditioned and only 85 were selected for membership in this ensemble. Eligibility rules require students to be in either 9 or 10 grade and for students to be full-time members of their high school band class.

This year the ensemble was Directed by Dr. Scott Jones, the Associate Director of Bands at The Ohio State University.
