Lan and Mia are vying for a chance to be awarded one of Dell’s 500 scholarships which include $20,000, a new laptop, $500 for textbooks and a Scholars Resource Network to help provide support at school.

South Washington County Schools interviewed both semifinalists to learn more about their educational journey and what they’re looking forward to in the future.

Lan Mai

How has the AVID program impacted your educationLan Mai journey?
AVID has given me many meaningful opportunities and experiences that I would not have personally gone out and pursued them myself because of self-consciousness. Many of my achievements are due to the skills I learned in AVID and the support from my AVID peers and teachers, so it has definitely made a positive impact in my education and life.

What is the most important thing you've learned in school? Why?
No personal success is without the help of others. From the smallest accomplishment of completing an assignment to achieving a big goal, I needed help every step of the way. Asking for help used to give me qualms but everyone needs help, there's no way one person can tackle a challenge alone; not even a single superhero with their mighty power could defeat Thanos, they needed their entire Avengers team to fight Thanos. I wouldn't be where I am today if I hadn't asked questions and asked for help from classmates, friends and teachers.

What has been, or will be, your biggest challenge?
Staying motivated. There are so many times when I want to give up on pursuing goals I have set for myself, and it is a terrible feeling when one moment I'm inspired but the next moment I'm not. I try to cope with it by thinking about how great I'll feel if I push through and accomplish those goals, and sometimes doing that brings my motivation back, sometimes I just need to think harder.

What are your plans or goals for the future?
I have a lot of plans for the future because I'm a big dreamer, but ultimately, I hope that I will be happy and be persistent while working on those goals and that the work I will do will mean something and bring joy to the people around me and the people who will discover it.

Mia Judkins

Mia JudkinsHow has the AVID program impacted your education journey?
AVID has helped me become a more outgoing and confident person in all aspects of life, including school. It helped me build my question-asking and communication skills, which is very helpful.

What is the most important thing you've learned in school? Why?
I think learning that the mitochondria is the powerhouse of the cell was pretty important.

What has been, or will be, your biggest challenge?

Procrastination has been, and always will be my number one struggle.

What are you most proud of?
I’m very proud of my work in Park High School theater. I don’t have one specific award or moment that I’m proud of, but two years of commitment and work.

What are your plans or goals for the future?
I want to do some traveling!

Dell Scholars finalists will be announced on March 9, 2021. Congratulations to Lan and Mia.
