Over 20 students from the Woodbury High School Science Olympiad Team recently attended the Regional Minnesota Science Olympiad Tournament. The team placed second overall and medaled in 15 individual events. They will advance to the State Tournament in March, where they will compete against 32 teams.

The Science Olympiad is a statewide competition that provides a platform for students who are interested in STEM (science, technology, engineering and math). The regional tournament is comprised of 14 events, while the state tournament includes 22-23 events. The diversity of the disciplines (biology, chemistry, physics, math, engineering and technology) encourages a wide cross section of high school students to get involved.

Events range from hands-on labs, student built machines, outdoor events, and paper and pencil tests. There is a balance between events requiring scientific knowledge and understanding, and others requiring process and application skills. Most events require teamwork, group planning and cooperation. The emphasis is on learning, participation, interaction, having fun and team spirit.

The Woodbury High School Science Olympiad team started nine years ago, and the team has made it to the state level every year. Members this year include:

  • 12th Grade: Anna Hildebrandt, Kate Philips
  • 11th Grade: Okuny Awow, Nidhi Checka, Tara Disanayaka, Duaa Ibrahim, David Li, Jenny Li, Johnny Rajan, Scott Sampson, Ethan Wu, Michael Xia
