Special Education Terms & Acronyms

ADD, ADHD:

Attention deficit disorder, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (Note: this is not a “category” of handicapping conditions.)

DAPE:

Developmental adaptive physical education. Physical Education adapted to the needs of a specific student who has a disability.

IDEA (Individuals with Disabilities Education Act):

The Federal law for special education

IEP:

Individual Education Plan. An IEP is a document that lists any special services a child needs, including goals to assist their progress. The team determines what services are in the IEP, where the services will be delivered, and any accommodations or modifications needed to accompany the goals.

IEP/IFSP Team:

Key decision-makers for a particular student: parents, teachers, support staff, administrators, etc. The members vary, but this team always includes the people listed on the IEP, IIP, or IFSP and must include the student after age 14 or grade 9.

IFSP:

Individual Family Service Plan. An IFSP focuses or identifies the needs of the child and family and how to best meet those needs. Frequently a young child over the age of three will have an IFSP.

IIIP:

Individual Interagency Implementation Plan. Children who receive special education services and services from another public agency will qualify for an IIIP.

Special Education:

Specially designed services that tailor to the individual and specialized needs of students. These needs are unique to each student.

SST:

Student support team, or special education team at the building
