Culturally and Linguistically Responsive Teaching

Culture is central to learning. It plays a role not only in communicating and receiving information, but also in shaping the thinking process of groups and individuals. A pedagogy that acknowledges, responds to, and celebrates fundamental cultures offers full, equitable access to education for students from all cultures and takes into account students cultural references.

A key component of culturally and linguistically responsive teaching (CLRT) in District 833 is VABBing (Validate, Affirm, Build, Bridge). VABBing supports teachers in how they talk to, relate to, and teach all students. The goal of this work is to increase the global dexterity of students by helping them navigate and understand a variety of cultural behaviors. This work prepares our students with 21st century skills.
