• The new addition should be organized into a house/pod layout around a shared flexible area, with additional support amenities to encourage collaboration.  

• The design will be intentional about traffic flow and circulation within the building, and sensitive to any current ‘pinch points’.  

• Access to natural daylight / maintaining glass into pod areas is a priority.  

• Designated spaces should be provided to support specialized learning, ie:  STEM.  

• Special education resource support spaces should be distributed in the new addition, in a similar way to the current pods.  

• Furniture should be flexible and mobile, easy to clean and durable.  

• Rooms with a similar function should be a consistent size.  

• STEM classrooms should be co-located near each other and have access to shared storage, as well access to the pod.   

• Science classrooms shall be near each other to have access to shared prep area/storage space and the pod.

• The pod area should include design elements (ie: ceiling materials, floor transitions) that create zones where classes break out. Areas for small group/individual work should be provided with furniture or built solutions.  

• At least one flexible conference room should be provided in each level of the pod to create some designation of space. 

• Multipurpose room should provide space for at least two classes (65-70) students to meet at one time.

• Cafeteria design should be sensitive to flexible uses and providing options for dining for various students' sensory needs.

  • Cafeteria expansion should have a portion of the addition space for 20-30 students to have a quieter, calmer option for dining. 

• Should provide students with various options for types of spaces to break up the space.

• Flexibility in the seating options will be maintained and expanded upon in new furniture.  

GUIDING PRINCIPLES: The design of the main entry should be consistent with the District’s safety and security standards. 

• The main office reception should be adjacent to the main entrance, creating a secure entry sequence.  

• This reception area should accommodate 3 workstations 

• There should be a (10-12) person conference room adjacent to the main entrance reception.  

• (1) Principal’s office, (2) Assistant Principal, and (1) Dean’s offices should be co-located with the main entry reception, but behind a secure line. 

• There should be a second entry into the admin suite from the corridor to allow for student access without going through the main reception space.

• The counselors (3) should be near the administration.  

• The design should include an office for itinerant/related service providers that is near the counselors.  

• The Psychologists should be co-located with the Special Education Coordinator.

• The Nurse’s area should be adjacent to the main reception space, but also allow for direct access for students. 

• There shall be a cot area with 4-5 cots that can be supervised by the Health Assistant. 

• There should be a reception space where the Health Assistant is housed.  

• There shall be a separate office within the space for the Head Nurse. 

• There should be a dedicated restroom for the nurse’s area.  

• The workroom should be near the main office reception.

• The renovations should provide a third music classroom.  

• The three music classrooms should be co-located.

The design should provide for a multipurpose space. This space should be able to be used for physical education when needed.
