SCHOOL BOARD MEETING
Thursday, February 20, 2020 / 6:30pm
District Service Center / Cottage Grove, MN

AGENDA
The purpose of this meeting is to consider the following:

1.0 Call to Order; Pursuant to due call and notice thereof, a meeting of the School Board of Independent School District 833, South Washington County, was held on Thursday, February 20, 2020. The meeting was called to order by Chair Tracy Brunnette, at 6:30pm at the District Service Center, located at 7362 East Point Douglas Road South, Cottage Grove, Minnesota. School Board Members present were: Tracy Brunnette, Melinda Dols, Pat Driscoll, Louise Hinz, Simi Patnaik, and Sharon Van Leer. Katie Schwartz arrived at 8:13pm. Student Board Representatives, Maya Mehra (WHS) and Hannah Poor (ERHS) were present. Emily Thompson (PHS) was absent. Superintendent Keith Jacobus was present.

2.0 Pledge of Allegiance

3.0 Approval of Agenda: It was moved by Sharon Van Leer, seconded by Melinda Dols to approve the amended agenda, moving 8.1 to follow district highlights. All in favor, none opposed, motion carried.

4.0 District Highlights: Teacher of the Year Nominations

• Jason Jankowski, Park High School
• Jaimie Forkrud, Pine Hill Elementary School
• Lisa Peterson, Liberty Ridge Elementary School

As amended at the beginning of the meeting, 8.1 Inclusive Playgrounds, presented by Kwame Ayim, Director of Facilities and Theresa Blume-Thole, Cottage Grove Elementary Principal. A student from Cottage Grove Elementary shared a letter she wrote about wanting her friend, who uses a wheelchair, to play on the playground with her. Ms. Blume-Thole shared the reasons for needing an accessible playground. Mr. Ayim shared the planning process for implementing the accessible structures. 

5.0 Public Comment: The following individuals approached the School Board:

• Marty Fridgen, regarding the teacher contract
• David Peters regarding digital fliers
• Jacinta Rivera regarding her education at District 833

6.0 Consent Items: It was moved by Sharon Van Leer to approve the consent agenda, seconded by Pat Driscoll. All in favor, none opposed, motion carried.

10.1 Approval of Proposed Policy Updates
Julie Nielsen, Assistant Superintendent presented for Mike Johnson. It was moved by Pat Driscoll , seconded by Sharon Van Leer to approve the proposed changes. All in favor, none opposed, motion carried.

10.2 Approval of Achievement and Integration Plan
Cori Thompson, Director of Achievement and Integration presented. It was moved by Sharon Van Leer, seconded by Pat Driscoll to approve the plan. All in favor, none opposed, motion carried.

11.0 Reports and Comments:

11.1 Superintendent’s Report: Dr. Jacobus reported on the student led summit and school board appreciation week.
11.2 Student School Board Representatives Reports:
Maya Mehra (WHS) reported their National Honor Society students are hosting a coffeehouse on Saturday. Band and orchestra concerts are next week. They are celebrating black history month; Spring sports are starting and Seniors recently ordered their caps and gowns. In the past month, French club raised funds for victims of the volcano eruptions and decorated for Chinese New Year,

Hannah Poor (ERHS) reported planning for the Senior all night party and completing registration for Fall of 2020. Science Olympiad is going to the state tournament. 2 students received state band recognition. The Gymnastics team won sections and are going to State. The Math team is going to state invitational and they’ve started a new boys volleyball team.

Emily Thompson (PHS) was absent.

12.0 Future Meeting Dates:

12.2 March 26, 2020 – School Board Meeting (DSC/6:30 p.m.)

13.0 Closed Session:
Pursuant to Minnesota Statute 13D.03 for labor negotiations. At 8:29pm, Sharon Van Leer moved to go to closed session, seconded by Katie Schwartz. All in favor, none opposed, motion carried. At 10:14pm, Louise Hinz motioned to re-convene the meeting, seconded by Katie Schwarz. All in favor, none opposed, motion carried.  

14.0 Adjournment: The meeting adjourned at 10:15pm.
