District 833 is pleased to announce that Francesca Wurm, senior at East Ridge High School, has been named one of six distinguished finalist for the 2018 Prudential Spirit of Community Awards in Minnesota.

Francesca created an art program for patients at a local hospital, offering a variety of craft projects to provide some relief from the stress of hospital stays. Francesca, having experienced this firsthand, worked with the hospital’s volunteer coordinator to plan the program, which has reached over 100 people and is now offered in two departments.

“Prudential is proud to recognize remarkable young people for using their energy, creativity and compassion to bring meaningful change to their communities,” said Prudential Chairman and CEO John Strangfeld. “We hope their stories inspire others to consider how they can do the same.”

Additionally, Francesca received the President’s Volunteer Service Award, based on the number of hours she has volunteered. This award recognizes Americans of all ages who have volunteered significant amounts of their time to serve their communities and their country. Francesca received an award certificate and a letter from the President of the United States for the President’s Volunteer Service Award.

“East Ridge is very proud of Francesca and her recent honor of being named a Prudential Spirit of Community Award recipient,” said East Ridge Principal Jim Smokrovich. “Francesca’s dedication to her school and community is top notch and she is very deserving of this award.”

Francesca received an engraved bronze Distinguished Finalist medallion to commemorate this prestigious award.
