Valley Crossing Elementary students advance to MathCON 2018 National Finals

Twelve students from Valley Crossing Elementary School have qualified to compete in the National MathCON 2018 Finals in Chicago on May 5 at the University of Illinois Chicago (UIC) Forum.

MathCON is a nonprofit national mathematics organization recognized for its annual student mathematics competition for students in grades 5-12, with more than 200,000 student participants since 2008. In the competition, students are challenged with a 90-minute timed test containing 70 questions, including multiple choice and constructed response. The competition questions cover algebra, geometry, measurement, data analysis, number systems and pre-calculus. Students from charter, public and private schools as well as individual students are eligible to compete in MathCON.

The 12 students who have advanced to the MathCON competition from Valley Crossing include: William Coulter (4th), Zachary Derks (5th), Kylie Estochen (5th), Nathan Kinney (5th), Eliza Kubicek (5th), Nathan Larsen (5th), David Li (4th), Yijar Lin (5th), Simon Roehl (5th), Harini Thiyagarajan (5th), Alexander Wang (4th) and Sophia Whitney (5th). They will be competing for cash prizes up to $200.

An additional 12 students were selected for the waitlist and will be invited to attend finals if spaces become available. These students include: Tara Budampti (5th), Eliot Decaire (5th), Kamden Giesen (5th), Ethan Lu (4th), Chenden Malli (5th), Areebah Mehvish (5th), Aiden Stauffer (5th), Cael Viesselman (5th), Christopher Wang (4th), Brianna Watters (5th), Peyton Welsch (5th) and Caroline Zhang (5th).
