This past school year, students and families have had several opportunities to celebrate and learn more about world cultures from South Washington County Schools sponsored events.

In May, the Community Inclusion Center at Park High School and Park’s ICC (Integrity, Compassion and Commitment) Committee hosted a two-hour multicultural event, “A Taste of Culture,” to provide new learning opportunities for students, families, staff and community members. At the event, attendees could explore interactive booths and learn more about the culture and history of America, East and West Africa, Italy and Southeast Asia. Attendees had the opportunity at each booth to sample games, food and entertainment from each region.

Earlier in the month, a Minnesota Asian Story Circle event was held at Cottage Grove Middle School, where community members, teachers, parents and students shared stories about their life experiences.

Also in May, District 833’s American Indian Education Parent Committee hosted a drum making event, where families were invited to learn how to make a traditional Native American drum.

In February, Woodbury and East Ridge high schools held African and African American celebrations. The celebrations were organized by students and district cultural liaisons and featured authentic cuisine, music and educational activities.

Also in February, Lake Middle School hosted a Lunar New Year Celebration for students and community members to learn more about Chinese, Korean and Vietnamese cultures. Ramsey County Attorney John J. Choi, the first Korean-American Chief Prosecutor in the nation, spoke at the event.

“We are committed to ensuring all of our students feel welcomed and supported at our schools. We believe these educational events are just one piece of the puzzle to help grow our students’ understanding and appreciation of other cultures,” said Kristine Schafer, District 833’s Coordinator of Educational Equity.
