State lawmakers learn about free summer meal programs

Sen. Karla Bigham and Rep. Peggy Flanagan visited Park High School and Newport Elementary School on Tuesday, June 26 to learn more about the free summer meal program for our youth and the “No Kid Hungry” pilot project.

This summer South Washington County Schools is offering free breakfast and lunch to kids and teens, regardless of need, at Park High School and Newport Elementary School. Parents or guardians can also purchase a low-cost meal at each school. At Newport Elementary School, students are invited to play on the playground before and after their meals.

Park High School
Weekdays through August 24
Breakfast: 8:00 – 9:30 a.m.
Lunch: 11:00 a.m. – 12:30 p.m.

Newport Elementary School
Weekdays through August 24
Breakfast: 8:00 – 9:30 a.m.
Lunch: 11:00 a.m. – 12:30 p.m.

Meals include either a hot or cold entrée, fruit, vegetables and a milk. Menus can be found on Nutrislice. Families will not be asked to fill out any paperwork and no names will be taken.

The “No Kid Hungry” pilot project is a partnership with South Washington County Schools, Second Harvest Heartland, Share Our Strength and business and community leaders. The goal of the project is to eliminate child hunger and provide a model for other school districts to do the same. Learn more about the No Kid Hungry Initiative.
