National Merit Scholarship Semifinalists

Ten of South Washington County Schools’ seniors have been named National Merit Scholarship Semifinalists and are in the running to earn a scholarship worth as much $2,500. In order to be named a Semifinalist, each student had to score in the top one percent in the state on the Preliminary SAT test last year.

The five East Ridge High School seniors include Jonas Hallstrom, Christopher Liu, Leah Restad, Christine Severude and Alexis Tao.

The five Woodbury High School seniors include Andrius Adomavicius, Kayla Chan, Nidhi Checka, Jenny Li and Luke Maier. In addition, David Li, who was able to graduate early from Woodbury High School, was also named a semifinalist in the competition.

Across the country, more than 1.6 million juniors took the Preliminary SAT to qualify for the honor. Of those students, about 16,000 have been named Semifinalists. These Semifinalists will now need to submit a detailed application, a recommendation from a high school official, an essay and earn an SAT score that confirms the student’s earlier performance on the qualifying test. In all, about 15,000 of the Semifinalists are expected to become Finalists and 7,500 of them will receive a scholarship. Finalists will be announced in February.
