SCHOOL BOARD MEETING

06:30 p.m. Thursday, April 27, 2017

District Service Center / Cottage Grove, MN

1.0 Call to Order; Roll Call

Pursuant to due call and notice thereof, a regular meeting of the School Board of Independent School District 833, South Washington County, was held on Thursday, April 27, 2017. The meeting was called to order by Chair Katy McElwee-Stevens, at 6:30pm, at the District Service Center, located at 7362 East Point Douglas Road South, Cottage Grove, Minnesota. School Board Members present were: Tracy Brunnette, Ron Kath, Katy McElwee-Stevens, Katie Schwartz, Joe Slavin and Michelle Witte. Sharon Van Leer was absent. Student Board Members Nidhi Jariwala (WHS) and Hayden Schulz (ERHS) were present. Student Board Member Melody Armstrong (PHS) was absent. Superintendent Keith Jacobus was present.

It was moved by Ron Kath and seconded by Katie Schwartz to approve the Consent agenda items. All in favor. None opposed. Motion carried.

8.0 Information Items:

8.1 Presale Report for Lease Purchase Financing

Dan Pyan, Director of Finance

Mr. Pyan explained these funds are for the addition to Woodbury Middle School and are part of the Long Range Facilities Plan. Ehlers prepared the report. The sale of certificates will return for approval at the May 25, 2017 Board meeting.

10.0 Action Items:

10.1 Approval of Resolution Terminating Probationary Teaching Contracts

This was initially approved by the Board at the April 6, 2017 meeting; however there was an omission in the list. It was moved by Tracy Brunnette to approve the resolution. Seconded by Ron Kath. Tracy Brunnette, Ron Kath, Katy McElwee-Stevens, Katie Schwartz, Joe Slavin and Michelle Witte voted in favor. Sharon Van Leer was absent. None opposed. Motion passed.

10.2 Approval of Repurposing of Oltman Middle School

Keith Jacobus, Superintendent

It was moved by Katie Schwartz to approve using Oltman Middle School Building for the Nueavas Fronteras Spanish Immersion program. Seconded by Michelle Witte. All in favor, none opposed. Motion passed.

10.3 Approval of the Southern Elementary Attendance Boundaries (PPT)

Mike Johnson, Assistant Superintendent

Mike Vogel, Interim Director of Facilities and Construction Management

They reviewed the altered recommendations. It was moved by Ron Kath to approve the Southern Elementary Attendance Boundaries. Seconded by Tracy Brunnette. All in favor, none opposed. Motion passed.

10.4 Approval of FY 2017-18 Long Term Facilities, Debt Service & Trust Fund

Mr. Pyan presented this budget at the April 6, 2017 meeting. It was moved by Katie Schwartz to approve these budgets. Seconded by Tracy Brunnette. All in favor, none opposed. Motion passed.

10.5 Approval of FY 2016-17 Revised Budget (PPT)

Mr. Pyan reviewed the budget for the past year. It was moved by Katie Schwartz to approve the revised budget. Seconded by Michelle Witte. All in favor, none opposed. Motion passed.

11.0 Reports and Comments:

11.1 Superintendent's Report:

Dr. Jacobus reported on the Spanish Immersion Program, Top Secret Project and Crosswinds.

11.2 Student School Board Member Reports: (Activated at 01:30:00)

Melody Armstrong, PHS: was absent, however Chair McElwee-Stevens shared her report. She reported that spring sports are starting up. Choir, band and orchestra are practicing for their spring concerts and students in the music programs went to see West Side Story at the Guthrie. There was an IB Art Show. The Thespian Troupe was chosen to go to the International Thespian festival this year and are working on their fundraising goal. The Addams Family play is opening tomorrow night and will have shows this weekend and next weekend. She noted testing season has begun. The changes to the Wolfpack hour have been positive. They have numerous fundraisers going on including a blanket drive, donations for Flint, MI, raising money for water in Sierra Leone and the creation of the Kindness Club. The Social Club has hosted a number of events in the past month. After testing wraps up, they will have dress up days and a student vs teacher basketball game, where the proceeds will create an EL scholarship to honor Mr. Neely. There is also a teacher talent show coming up where proceeds will go to Sierra Leone.

Nidhi Jariwala, WHS: reported on testing, student council held a blood drive and hosted kindness month with appreciation days for staff. Orchestra from across the district performed in the district orchestra festival at WHS. The Cherry Orchard is the spring play and is starting this weekend. Prom and the Grand March was last weekend.

Hayden Schulz, ERHS: reported on testing, the arts, noting the jazz band has a concert tomorrow. The AP had an art show in Stillwater, and there's a choir concert coming up on May 25th. He reported on spring athletics, spring break, prom, Special Ed prom and senior awards night coming up on May 24th. Student council has a planned parents night out for Cinco de Mayo where they will watch the children so parents can go out.

It was moved by Tracy Brunnette and seconded by Katie Schwartz to adjourn the meeting. All in favor. None opposed. Motion carried. The meeting adjourned at 8:11pm.
