1.0 Call to Order; Roll Call

Pursuant to due call and notice thereof, a regular meeting of the School Board of Independent School District 833, South Washington County, was held on Thursday, February 16, 2017. The meeting was called to order by Chair Katy McElwee-Stevens, at 6:30pm at the District Service Center, located at 7362 East Point Douglas Road South, Cottage Grove, Minnesota. School Board Members present were: Ron Kath, Katy McElwee-Stevens, Katie Schwartz, Joe Slavin, Sharon Van Leer and Michelle Witte. Tracy Brunnette was absent. Student Board Members, Melody Armstrong (PHS) and Nidhi Jariwala (WHS) were present. Student Board Member Hayden Schulz (ERHS) was absent. Superintendent Keith Jacobus was present.

It was moved by Sharon Van Leer and seconded by Ron Kath to approve the agenda. All in favor. None opposed. Motion carried.

It was moved by Sharon Van Leer and seconded by Ron Kath to approve the Consent agenda items. All in favor. None opposed. Motion carried.

8.0 Information Items:

8.1 Culturally and Linguistically Responsive Teaching (PPT)

Julie Nielsen, Assistant Superintendent

Sarah Sorenson-Wagner, Principal of Woodbury High School and staff presented on how they personalize learning for their students. They provided examples of what they do with students to learn more about them, while engaging and motivating students.

8.2 Middle School Update

Mike Vogel, Interim Director of Facilities and Construction Management

He highlighted progress occurring at Cottage Grove, Lake and Woodbury Middle Schools as well as the new Oltman Middle School progress.

8.3 Financial Update

Dan Pyan, Director of Finance

He highlighted the history and current financial state of the district.

10.0 Action Items:

10.1 Approval of Ramsey-Washington Metro Watershed District Incentive Program School Site Grant Agreement (PPT)

Mike Vogel, Interim Director of Facilities and Construction Management

This project was proposed at the February 2, 2017 meeting. It was moved by Katie Schwartz, seconded by Sharon Van Leer to approve the Watershed Grant. None opposed, motion carried.

11.0 Reports and Comments:

11.1 Superintendent's Report

Dr. Jacobus noted next week is School Board Recognition Week and recognized the Board Members and student Board Representatives for their work. He also highlighted teachers who shadowed a student for the day.

11.2 Student School Board Member Reports

Melody Armstrong, PHS, reported on athletics and student involvement at the games. Spring sports athletes are getting excited to start. She noted the One Act Play received 3 stars at the state competition and there was an increase in student support at the play. The One Act play will perform at the Thespian Festival at the Guthrie this weekend. Band, Orchestra and Choir concerts are coming up. IB Art class is doing a showcase. She noted Wolfpack hour is changing. IB testing preparation is starting. She highlighted the ICC Initiative. Snow week is coming up with a board game theme. Pennies for patients drive is also starting.

Nidhi Jariwala, WHS, reported the Chinese New Year celebration started the month at WHS. There was Winter Week planned by Student Council, which ended with the annual Winter Dance. National Honor Society is having their annual coffeehouse to raise money for the homeless. Suburban East Conference for the band, orchestra and choir was a success. More March music concerts will be at the beginning of March. She also reported on Athletics. Registration for Spring sports is also starting. LINK Crew is hosting a freshman party.

Hayden Schulz, ERHS was absent, however he prepared an update, which was read by School Board Chair Katy McElwee-Stevens. The highlights included arts with theater finishing their 2-One Act plays. Band, Orchestra and Choir have their winter concerts coming up. Athletics were also highlighted, where they are wrapping up a successful basketball season. They have 2 students who were nominated for the Miss Minnesota Basketball Award. Winter Week concluded with a semi-formal dance a few weeks ago. Student council is attending the Capital Division Sprinter Convention tomorrow at Farmington High School.
