SCHOOL BOARD MEETING

06:30 p.m. Thursday, November 17, 2016

District Service Center / Cottage Grove, MN

1.0 Call to Order; Roll Call

Pursuant to due call and notice thereof, a regular meeting of the School Board of Independent School District 833, South Washington County, was held on Thursday, November 17, 2016. The meeting was called to order by Chair Ron Kath, at 6:30pm at the District Service Center, located at 7362 East Point Douglas Road South, Cottage Grove, Minnesota. School Board Members present were: Tracy Brunnette, Ron Kath, Katy McElwee-Stevens, Joe Slavin, Sharon Van Leer & Michelle Witte. Katie Schwartz was absent. Student Board Representatives, Melody Armstrong (PHS), Nidhi Jariwala (WHS) and Hayden Schulz (ERHS) were present. Superintendent Keith Jacobus was present.

It was moved by Sharon Van Leer and seconded by Tracy Brunnette to approve the agenda. All in favor. None opposed. Motion carried.

It was moved by Sharon Van Leer and seconded by Katy McElwee-Stevens to approve the Consent Agenda items. All in favor. None opposed. Motion carried.

8.1 Federal Programs Update (PPT)

Matt Dorschner, Director of Teaching and Learning Services

Brian Boothe, Director of Professional Development and Accountability

Rich Romano, Newport Elementary Principal

They reviewed the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA) (replaces No Child Left Behind), Title Programs and Funding, and an update on the Worlds Best Workforce.

8.2 Review of Enrollment Parameters

Mike Johnson, Assistant Superintendent

Julie Nielsen, Assistant Superintendent

They will bring this information back for approval at the December 1st School Board Meeting.

11.0 Reports and Comments:

11.1 Superintendent's Report:

Dr. Jacobus reported on how well polling functioned this year in our schools due to changes made by the collaboration with district, city and county personnel. He also shared the weekly video.

11.2 Student School Board Member Reports

Melody Armstrong, PHS: She reported on the current athletics at Park. Theater just finished the play, Noises Off, then started auditions for their 2 chamber shows. Speech team tryouts started and the orchestra concerts were over the past two weeks. She reported on their Blood drive, ICC Ambassadors, Child in Need program and noted teachers in various departments are making their "mannequin challenge" videos.

Nidhi Jariwala, WHS: reported on the recent college fair, blood drive, veteran's day program and student of the trimester breakfast. Theater is currently putting on the musical, The Pajama Game, Trimester 1 finals are in 2 weeks and the Link Crew has set up a program where the upper class will help the freshman prepare for finals with hot cocoa.

Hayden Schulz, ERHS: reported on the theater production of the Little Mermaid. He noted students were able to participate in political activities and highlighted the sports events and Veterans Day program.
