SCHOOL BOARD MEETING

1.0 Call to Order; Roll Call

1.1 Oath of Office for 2-year term Board Member Seat

Ms. Hirsch was present, sworn in and seated.

Pursuant to due call and notice thereof, a meeting of the School Board of Independent School District 833, South Washington County, was held on Thursday, December 7, 2017. The meeting was called to order by Chair Katy McElwee-Stevens, at 6:30pm at the District Service Center, located at 7362 East Point Douglas Road South, Cottage Grove, Minnesota. School Board Members present were: Tracy Brunnette, Ron Kath, Katy McElwee-Stevens, Katie Schwartz, Sharon Van Leer and Michelle Witte. Superintendent Keith Jacobus was present.

Katy McElwee Stevens requested a closed session be added to the agenda, pursuant to Minnesota Statutes section 13D.05, subdivision 3(c)(3), to consider and potentially develop an offer or counteroffer to possible purchase of Crosswinds Arts and Science School, which is located at 600 Weir Drive, Woodbury, Minnesota 55125. It was moved by Michelle Witte and seconded by Sharon Van Leer to approve the amended agenda. All in favor. None opposed. Motion carried.

It was moved by Sharon Van Leer and seconded by Tracy Brunnette to approve the Consent Agenda items. All in favor. None opposed. Motion carried.

7.0 Workshop Items:

7.1 District Management Group Update (PPT)

Keith Jacobus, Superintendent

Sam Ribnick, Senior Director with DMG, presented their work with District 833. He noted they are partnering with South Washington County Schools to review Special Education. He reviewed goals for Special Education at the Elementary and Secondary levels, as well as interventions for struggling students.

8.0 Information Items:

8.1 Construction Update

Mike Vogel, Interim Director of Facilities and Construction Management

He provided updates for the three existing Middle Schools, as well as the construction of the new Oltman Middle School. He further reviewed the process for renovations at the current Oltman Middle School as they prepare to transition the building to Nuevas Fronteras Elementary School.

8.2 World's Best Workforce Update

Brian Boothe, Director of Professional Development and Accountability

He shared that there was a public hearing in November and noted the documents in the packet provide all the details.

8.3 Public Hearing for Taxes Payable in 2018* (PPT)

Dan Pyan, Director of Finance

*Following the presentation, public comment will be accepted regarding School District Taxes. Individuals with property evaluation questions should contact the Washington County Assessor.

He shared how district money is collected, the revenue sources, and how this affects taxes. Public Commented was available following the presentation. No one addressed the Board.

10.0 Action Items:

10.1 Approval of Superintendent's Contract

Katy McElwee-Stevens, Board Chair

She reviewed the current parameters of his contract, which will begin July 1, 2018 and end June 30, 2021. Moved by Ron Kath to approve the contract, seconded by Katie Schwartz. All in favor, none opposed, motion passed.

11.0 Reports and Comments:

11.1 Superintendent's Report

Dr. Jacobus reported the students at Cottage Grove Middle School who are collecting for Toys for Tots and were highlighted on KARE11. He also shared the recent professional development for the transportation department about special education students and behavior.

11.2 School Board Member Reports

Tracy Brunnette: had her final 916 board meeting last night. She noted 916's audit is good.

Ron Kath: attended the empty bowls event as a celebrity waiter and Citizen's Finance Advisory Committee. He thanked the CAPE committee for their work on the holiday party tomorrow.

Katy McElwee-Stevens: attended the Citizen's Finance Advisory Committee meeting and encouraged staff to attend the CAPE holiday party.

Katie Schwartz: attended the food pack and empty bowls event with Sharon Van Leer. She also attended the Pine Hill family dinner.

Sharon Van Leer: she will be attending the City of Woodbury meeting tomorrow.

Michelle Witte: recognized the Community Education staff at the recent Robotics tournament. She highlighted the fall high school musicals and reminded people to wear their ugly sweaters for the board meeting on 12/21.

Heather Hirsch: She attended the Hillside Choir concert as a parent.

Closed Session: Pursuant to Minnesota Statutes section 13D.05, subdivision 3(c)(3), to consider and potentially develop an offer or counteroffer to possible purchase of Crosswinds Arts and Science School, which is located at 600 Weir Drive, Woodbury, Minnesota 55125

As approved at the beginning of the meeting, the agenda was amended to add a closed session pursuant to Minnesota Statutes section 13D.05, subdivision 3(c)(3), to consider and potentially develop an offer or counteroffer to possible purchase of Crosswinds Arts and Science School, which is located at 600 Weir Drive, Woodbury, Minnesota 55125. It was moved by Sharon Van Leer, seconded by Katie Schwartz to move to closed session at 8:49pm. All in favor, none opposed, motion passed. At 9:37pm it was motioned by Tracy Brunette to return to session. Seconded by Sharon Van Leer. All in favor, none opposed, motion passed.

It was moved by Sharon Van Leer, seconded by Tracy Brunnette to adjourn at 9:37pm. All in favor, none opposed, motion passed.
