SCHOOL BOARD MEETING

06:30 p.m. Thursday, January 18, 2018

District Service Center / Cottage Grove, MN

1.0 Call to Order; Roll Call

Pursuant to due call and notice thereof, a meeting of the School Board of Independent School District 833, South Washington County, was held on Thursday, January 18, 2018. The meeting was called to order by Chair Tracy Brunnette, at 6:30pm at the District Service Center, located at 7362 East Point Douglas Road South, Cottage Grove, Minnesota. School Board Members present were: Tracy Brunnette, Pat Driscoll, Heather Hirsch, Ron Kath, Katie Schwartz, Sharon Van Leer and Michelle Witte. Superintendent Keith Jacobus was present. Student representatives present were Nidhi Jariwala (WHS), Lindsey Strom (PHS) and Julia Travis (ERHS).

It was moved by Sharon Van Leer and seconded by Katie Schwartz to approve the agenda. All in favor, none opposed. Motion passed.

It was moved by Pat Driscoll and seconded by Ron Kath to approve the consent agenda. All in favor, none opposed, motion passed.

8.1 Strategic Plan Update (PPT)

Keith Jacobus, Superintendent

Superintendent Jacobus and Cabinet Members reviewed the objectives and priority statements. They shared the goals and work being done in year two of the Plan.

8.2 Financial Update (PPT)

Dan Pyan, Director of Finance

Mr. Pyan reviewed where the district was one year ago, where we are now and where we are headed now that the referendum passed.

10.0 Action Items:

10.1 Approval of School Board Assignments (School and committee assignment lists)

Tracy Brunnette, School Board Chair

It was moved by Ron Kath and seconded by Sharon Van Leer to approve the school and committee assignments. All in favor, none opposed, motion passed.

11.0 Reports and Comments:

11.1 Superintendent's Report

Dr. Jacobus reported on the upcoming elections, nomination of Rich Romano for Teacher of the Year and the equity work being done.

11.2 Student School Board Member Reports

Nidhi Jariwala, WHS: reported on Royals Opportunity Night, which allowed incoming freshman to learn about academics, athletics and activities available to them. WHS hosted a speech tournament and blood drive and college planning event. They are participating in the SEC Music Festival at Stillwater High School and next week is the beginning of winter week with spirit days and their winter dance on Friday.

Lindsey Strom, PHS: reported they hosted a Wolfpack Welcome for incoming freshman so they could learn about academics, activities and athletics. Registration is open for classes for next year. Tomorrow they are participating in the One Act plays at ERHS, with competition starting next week. PHS is also participating in the SEC Music Festival at Stillwater High School. Dr. Keith Mays talked to students about how to avoid racism and be more accepting of others. She noted the week of February 5th starts off Snow Week with a semi-formal dance at school on February 9th.

Julia Travis, ERHS: reported after winter break they started Raptor Time for students, where they have 20-25 mins each day to work on homework or 1 day a week they can participate in different fun activities or meet with teachers to make up work or tests. They are also planning Winter Week the first week of February with a semi-formal dance at end of the week. Part of the festivities are to place stars around the school with each student's name. They also have Coffee House and are hosting the SWC One Act Festival. She also provided an update on sports.

Sharon Van Leer motioned to adjourn the meeting. Seconded by Katie Schwartz. All in favor, none opposed. Motion passed. The meeting adjourned at 8:08pm.
