Agenda and Minutes
1.0 Call to Order; Roll Call: Pursuant to due call and notice thereof, a meeting of the School Board of Independent School District 833, South Washington County, was held on Thursday, November 7, 2024. The meeting was called to order by Chair Katie Schwartz, at 6:00pm at the District Service Center, 7362 East Point Douglas Road South, Cottage Grove, MN 55016. School Board Members present: Ryan Clarke, Melinda Dols, Pat Driscoll, Simi Patnaik, Katie Schwartz, Eric Tessmer and Sharon Van Leer. Superintendent Nielsen was present.
2.0 Pledge of Allegiance
3.0 Approval of Agenda: It was moved by Sharon Van Leer, seconded by Melinda Dols to approve the agenda. All in favor, none opposed, motion carried.
4.0 Workshop Items:
Abby Baker, Executive Director of Human Resources & Operations
Wendy Peterson, Director of Nutrition Services shared information about the continued increase of meals they are serving, their budget, their fun activities with students and the new food rescue program where they donate unused food items.
5.0 Information Items:
Kris Blackburn, Director of Business Services
Ms. Blackburn shared 2023-24 preliminary budget results, enrollment updates and impact and the projected fund balance.
Julie Nielsen, Superintendent
Ms. Nielsen shared the draft of the 2025-26 calendar. If there are adjustments necessary for construction purposes over the summer of 2026, those adjustments will occur by Spring 2025. This calendar will return on November 21, 2024 for approval.
5.3 First Reading of Proposed Policy Changes

There was no request for public comment on the proposed changes. These policies will return on November 21, 2024 for approval.
6.0 Reports and Comments:
Superintendent Nielsen highlighted the girls East Ridge volleyball playoff games, swim and dive team competing in the state tournament, high school plays, and Veteran’s Day on Monday.
Melinda Dols wrote the following report: 916 Update:
-World's Best Workforce was aligned with 916's Strategic Actions.
-Until now, Intermediate School Districts had not developed a plan because they were seen as an extension of their member districts.
-WBWF four main areas are Kindergarten Readiness, Close Achievement Gaps, College Readiness, and High School Graduation
-WBWF Goals met for Kindergarten Readiness at 100%. Goals were not met in the other areas, but graduation rates showed increases.
-Strategic Action Program Spotlight of the Auditory/Oral Program at Stillwater Early Childhood Family Center was presented. You can learn about the program at Auditory Oral - Northeast Metro 916 Intermediate School District
7.0 Future Meeting Dates:
November 21, 2024 – School Board Business Meeting (DSC/6:00 p.m.)
December 12, 2024 - School Board Workshop Meeting (DSC/6:00 p.m.)
