The Color Me Beautiful club at Woodbury High School recently volunteered their time and collected supplies for Women of Nations, a local women’s shelter.

The Color Me Beautiful club serves as a space for female students of color to connect, discuss and explore solutions to the issues the students face as women of color. The club does more than support each other, they also participate in community service projects, raise awareness about topics that impact women of color and seek ways to better their communities.

Current club co-president, Bitanya Yared said “Our group is about women supporting women.”

The students previously had collected and organized school supplies, winter gear and household goods to donate to the shelter.

“We wanted to make an impact for women in need in our community,” said senior Stephanie Abrokwah.

Members of the group also volunteered to organize the donation and supply rooms and helped clean, rearrange and decorate the living areas of the shelter.

“It was really fulfilling,” said co-president Stephanie Ikuomola. “We got to build a human connection with some of the moms there. They had a lot of input in how we arranged and decorated things.”

“I loved interacting with the kids,” said senior Gifty Adofo. “Doing good makes you feel good.”

“This was a chance for us to connect with women in a different setting that are part of our communities,” said junior Bethel Medhane. “It felt nice to give rather than receive.”
