Moving forward, Juneteenth will be observed as a holiday on the district calendar similar to the Fourth of July.

This directive follows the recent law and amendment passed by the State Legislature during the 2023 session and signed by Governor Tim Walz.

Juneteenth recognizes the historical pronouncement of the abolition of slavery on June 19, 1865, when the Emancipation Proclamation was said to have been first publicly read in Texas by Union soldiers.
