New Required Personal Finance Course for High School Students

New Required Personal Finance Course for High School Students

Dear High School Families,

Beginning in the 2026–27 school year, students in the Class of 2028 and beyond (current 10th grade students) will be required to complete a one-credit (one-trimester) Personal Finance course as part of their high school graduation requirements, in accordance with new state legislation.

This course is designed to help students build financial literacy skills, including budgeting, saving, managing credit, understanding loans, taxes, and investments — knowledge that will help them make informed financial decisions as adults.

The course will be offered to students in grades 11 and 12 only, with the first offerings beginning during the 2026–27 school year. Students currently in grade 10 will have the opportunity to register for this course during the regular January 2026 registration period.

Please note that the addition of this course does not change the total number of credits required for graduation; students will continue to need 66 credits to graduate.

We recognize that some students may have full academic schedules or specialized coursework that makes it challenging to fit this new requirement into their schedule. The district is actively exploring additional options and flexible opportunities to help all students complete the Personal Finance requirement while maintaining access to their other academic and elective courses.

We’re excited to offer this valuable opportunity to help students prepare for their future success. If you have any questions about registration or graduation requirements, please reach out to your student’s assigned counselor.

Thank you for your continued partnership in supporting our students’ learning and success.
