Finding the Perfect College

South Washington Alternative High School (SWAHS) student, Mazaiya Marshall, was chosen to attend the 2025 Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU) tour with Fellowship Minneapolis this fall.
This incredible opportunity came to light thanks to a thoughtful tip from SWAHS teacher Mike Shelhamer. After discovering the program during a segment on television, he immediately knew it was a perfect fit for Mazaiya, who has expressed a strong interest in attending an HBCU. Acting quickly, Mazaiya discussed it with her family and completed her application in record time and was selected to join Fellowship Minneapolis’ annual tour.
“Mazaiya is such an amazing young woman,” said principal Ashley Ruka. “It was no surprise to us that her application stood out and she was awarded this awesome opportunity.”
Mazaiya joined 43 students, traveling over the MEA break to explore a selection of six HBCUs throughout Alabama, Georgia and Florida. The tour is designed to connect students directly with the rich history, academic excellence and vibrant community life that HBCUs are known for.
“All of the campuses felt like family,” said Mazayia. “The staff and students were so welcoming and made us feel at home. You can really feel an instant connection of community. I already made some friends.”
The students toured the campuses and attended social events for prospective applicants so they could get a sense of the unique culture of HBCUs and envision their future at these prestigious institutions.
“I went into this thinking I was going to love Clark Atlanta best,” said Mazaiya. “I was blown away by Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University (FAMU), they have a hair store/salon on campus and so many places to meet new people.”
Mazaiya plans to pursue a degree in Film and explore directing and screenwriting. She plans on applying to FAMU and possibly a few other HBCUs she toured.
“I am so grateful for this opportunity, experiencing the HBCU family in person really let me know it would be a good fit for me.” said Mazayia.
Congratulations to Mazaiya on this well-deserved journey to find the perfect college home.
