Finding a Just Right Book

Finding a Just Right Book

It is important that students read books and texts that they can both decode (read the words) and comprehend (understand the meaning). This is referred to as a “just right” book or text.

Books should be challenging enough that students learn some new vocabulary and grow their skills. Books that are too easy can lead to boredom. Difficult books can lead to frustration if the student needs help comprehending the text. Choosing a book that is “just right” can help your student build confidence and fluency.

Students enjoy the books they choose most. Asking your child what kind of characters, genre and themes they enjoy most in stories can help you choose together a “just right” book that will engage their interests.
