Negotiations Update - UTSWC Session Four

During the fourth negotiation session, South Washington County Schools (SoWashCo Schools) and the United Teachers of South Washington County (UTSWC) met to discuss several contract proposals.

The SoWashCo Schools negotiations team proposed language changes to better define homeroom and advisory classes for students. The main goals of these classes is to help create relationships between students and teachers. Following a discussion with principals and union leaders, there was a mutual understanding on how to move forward and a tentative agreement was reached to renew the current memorandum of agreement.

Initial discussions regarding several other proposals included:

  • Pay rates for “collapsed classrooms” in which students are moved to another teacher’s classroom when a teacher’s absence could not be filled by a substitute

  • Student learning during emergency closures

  • Cashing in paid absence leave in certain circumstances

  • Paid absence leave during adoptions or birth of a child

  • Preparation time to communicate with parents

  • Language updates for Early Childhood Family Education (ECFE)

  • Flexible transitions back to the classroom for ATPPS (Alternative Teacher Performance Pay System) teachers on special assignments (TOSAs)

  • Non-student contact days in relation to the district calendar

Union leadership also recently met with the Department of Teaching and Learning for an overview of SoWashCo Online - the secondary online school that will be in place for the 2022-23 school year. These early discussions will help lay the groundwork for a successful online learning opportunity for students.

The next negotiations session is scheduled for Aug. 17.
