In-District Online Professional Development

Registration for the following courses is now open in PD Express.  

The following courses will be available year-round. Each course will be self-paced to offer flexibility for our teachers.  Each course has different requirements for completion.  Most courses will be conducted using the Google Sites platform.  Each course requires teachers to create a product to demonstrate mastery of content/information or a reflection.  These products should be useful for teachers in the classroom.

Google Apps Introductory Level

Digital Tools for use with English Learners

In this course, you will examine and evaluate different digital resources that can help the English Learners in your classroom. While all of these resources are great for all learners, this course focuses on the four domains of listening, speaking, reading & writing as these are the areas in which English learners need extra support.

ELM (Electronic Library Minnesota) Databases

This course will introduce teachers to the ELM (Electronic Library Minnesota) which are database subscriptions purchased for all Minnesota libraries, media centers, and schools. ELM gives Minnesota residents online access to magazine, journal, newspaper, and encyclopedia articles, eBooks (online books), and other information resources. ELM provides information on a vast array of topics, including consumer information, arts and humanities, current events, health, science, social science, politics, business, and more.

Participants will explore the ELM databases and develop and share digital lessons created using ELM content.

SAFARI Montage provides K-12 school districts with a comprehensive solution for their digital media distribution and visual instruction needs. The full suite of integrated products gives educators and administrators of a single interface for accessing all visual resources from inside the school district intranet or from home. SAFARI Montage houses educational video titles tied to the curriculum from the industry's leading video publishers including Schlessinger Media, PBS, The History Channel, National Geographic, Scholastic, Disney Education, BBC, and more.

Participants will explore SAFARI-Montage and develop and share digital lessons around SAFARI-Montage content.

Using Formative Assessments Effectively in Grades K-5

Teachers will learn about research and various forms of formative assessments.

Teachers will learn about discussion protocols including guiding questions when looking at assessment data.

Teachers will create formative assessments.

Teachers will engage in discussion with other participants to reflect.

One hour of license renewal credit is earned upon completion of the assignments and evaluation for each of the six "requirements." In these online sessions, participants will complete a variety of tasks.

Target Audience: Pre-K-12 Teachers who are seeking license renewal credits required by the MDE.

Flipped Classrooms

Teachers will share what a flipped lesson means to them and will use current research to learn about flipping a lesson.

Teachers will use Open Educational Resources to find content that could be used to teach their standards.

Teachers will be able to use multiple applications or programs to video capture a lesson.

Teachers will take a lesson that they have taught and “flip the lesson” using ShowMe, QuickTime, ScreenCast-o-matic, ScreenChomp, or Smart Notebook.

Competency Based Instruction

This course will serve as an introduction to competency-based education which measures learning rather than time. Students progress by demonstrating their competence, which means they prove that they have mastered the knowledge and skills (called competencies) required for a particular course, regardless of how long it takes.
