Students and staff can look forward to a new, larger Oltman Middle School in the fall of 2018

Construction is moving into the next phase at the new Oltman Middle School in Cottage Grove. The site, located at 6625 Goodview Ave. S., is expected to be complete by fall of 2018.

Significant progress is being made on the exterior and interior construction, and site preparation. Masonry work is nearing completion on the exterior of the building. The roof is “dried-in” to prevent moisture incursions and the roof installation is about 50% complete. Temporary enclosures have been installed in window openings and window installation has begun.

Inside the building, crews are working on pouring interior slabs and construction of masonry walls is ongoing. Mechanical and electrical trades are roughing in their systems. Curtain wall and glass panel installation are underway for the pool. Gym and cafeteria and prep work for the metal panel installations has started. Specialty contractors will begin work on the pool and gym components once mechanical and electrical are complete in those areas. Finishing schedules are being finalized to coordinate with mechanical installations.

On the site landscaping, irrigation system and turf installations are in progress. Ball fields, track surfaces, fences, backstops and trails are installed. The first lift of asphalt is complete and the city constructed roads and round-a-bout are complete and open to traffic.

Once completed, the new Oltman Middle School will accommodate as many as 1,100 students. There is the possibility for a future expansion to increase capacity for as many as 1,300 students.

The School Board purchased a 57-acre parcel of land for $5,142,600 in 2016. The site, located at 6625 Goodview Ave. S. in Cottage Grove, was previously owned by Bailey Nurseries. In the northwest corner of Cottage Grove, the land is adjacent to the city boundaries of Newport and St. Paul Park and approximately a half mile south of the Woodbury and Cottage Grove border.

Bids for the $72 million project are running 2-3% below budget estimates due to a competitive bid environment, constructability of the school design, economic material choice and efficient construction management.
