Students and staff can look forward to a new, larger Oltman Middle School in the fall of 2018

Construction is underway at the new Oltman Middle School site with completion still expected in the fall of 2018.

Significant progress is being made on the exterior construction and site preparation. Floors and steel roof are being set in place which will allow for construction of the steel stud framing.

Site work is nearing completion with the ponds and city field area at finish grade. District softball fields and the track infield have been graded and seeded. Concrete curbing and asphalt has been installed for the bus and visitor parking lots. Construction of the public roads serving the site is nearing finalization, with work beginning on the roundabout and other 65th Street improvements as the next phase of the city project.

Once completed the new Oltman Middle School will accommodate as many as 1,100 students. There is the possibility for a future expansion to increase capacity for as many as 1,300 students.

The School Board purchased a 57-acre parcel of land for $5,142,600 in 2016. The site, located at the corner of 65th Street and Geneva Ave. in Cottage Grove, was previously owned by Bailey Nurseries. In the northwest corner of Cottage Grove, the land is adjacent to the city boundaries of Newport and St. Paul Park and approximately 1/2 mile south of the Woodbury and Cottage Grove border.

Bids for the $72 million project are running 2-3% below budget estimates due to a competitive bid environment, constructability of the school design, economic material choice and efficient construction management.
