Assistant Superintendents for Academic Excellence and Accountability

Michael Johnson began as an Assistant Superintendent for Academic Excellence and Accountability in July 2014. Before joining the South Washington County Schools, Johnson served as the Director of Academic Services for the School District of River Falls in River Falls, Wisconsin. He has also served in other administrative capacities in that same district as Principal of Meyer Middle School and Assistant Principal at River Falls High School. Johnson has been an adjunct professor at the University of St. Thomas and the University of Wisconsin at River Falls in their principal licensure programs.

Johnson’s degrees include a Ed. S. from the University of St. Thomas, and a Master’s in Education and Bachelor of Arts degrees from the University of Wisconsin at Eau Claire.  


Julie Nielsen began as an Assistant Superintendent for Academic Excellence and Accountability in July 2014, after serving as Middleton Elementary School’s principal for eight years. Nielsen previously served as an elementary principal for Northfield Public Schools for four years. Prior to principal leadership, she was with District 833 from 1992 through 2002, as an assistant principal, physical education specialist, and girls’ basketball coach.

Nielsen holds superintendent licensure, K-12 educational administrative licensure, and master’s in education through Saint Mary’s University, and K-12 physical education, developmentally adapted physical education and coaching certificate from Winona State University. She is a member of the Minnesota Elementary Principals’ Association, the Metropolitan Principals’ Academy, and the Association for Supervision, Curriculum and Staff Development.

Kristine Schaefer began as an Assistant Superintendent for Academic Excellence and Accountability in August 2018, after serving as the District’s Equity Coordinator for three years. Schaefer previously served as the principal for Woodbury Elementary School from 2006 to 2015. She has also worked within District 833 as the assistant principal at Crestview Elementary, an elementary principal intern at Hillside and Pine Hill elementary, and a counselor at Park High School. Before joining District 833, Schaefer was the dean of students at Forest Lake High School.

Schaefer is currently an adjunct professor at St. Mary’s University in the principal’s licensure program. She holds superintendent licensure and K-12 educational administrative licensure. She has a Bachelor of Arts and a Master of Science degree from the University of Wisconsin-Stout and is currently working towards her Doctorate in Educational Leadership.
