Upcoming Community Conversations scheduled to discuss the 2015-16 budget

The South Washington County School District is preparing a final budget and Service Level Matrix for the 2015-16 school year. Administration has been reviewing the status of the general fund, following the recent audit release, and will be sharing a set of proposed budget reductions to accommodate the required district fund balance policy. The district’s fund balance policy requires a minimum of five percent of the general fund be kept as a fund balance amount. Over the past few years the district has intentionally spent down its fund balance to align with a fund balance policy and to maintain the services and programs offered to students.

In the past decade the pace of inflation and reduced funding from the state has made it impossible to maintain programming and remain within the five percent fund balance parameter at the end of the current fiscal year (June 30, 2015). As a result, budget reductions are needed for the 2015-16 school year. At this time, the approximate amount could be as much as $8 million, or about four percent of the overall district budget.

Members of the district’s administration will lead Community Conversations to discuss the proposed adjustments. Community members may attend any session that fits their schedule:

  • Wednesday, Feb. 4, in the Park High School Lecture Hall from 6:30-8 p.m.
  • Monday, Feb. 9, in the Woodbury High School Lecture Hall from 6:30-8 p.m.
  • Wednesday, Feb. 11, in the East Ridge High School Media Center from 6:30-8 p.m.
