Two fifth grade students qualify for Regional Spelling Bee

South Washington County Schools would like to congratulate Annika Kim, fifth grader at Liberty Ridge Elementary and Aidan Lugo, fifth grader at Valley Crossing Elementary, on qualifying for the Regional Spelling Bee, sponsored by the Metropolitan Educational Cooperative Service Unit.

Each year, schools host a school wide spelling bee for fourth and fifth grade students. This is the first step for the Scripps National Spelling Bee. Both Annika and Aidan won their classroom spelling bee, followed by their school spelling bee. They proceeded to take an online test of spelling and vocabulary words, which qualified them for regionals.

Annika and Aidan are two of only 50 students from across the metro area who qualified for the Regional Spelling Bee. The winner of the Regional Bee will receive an all-expenses paid trip to the Washington, D.C. area to compete in the 2018 Scripps National Spelling Bee.

The Regional Spelling Bee takes place on March 27 at 5:30 pm at St. Catherine University. Best of luck to both Annika and Aidan!
