Minnesota State Senator Karla Bigham presented Park High School with a Senate Resolution recognizing its accomplishment as the first Advancement Via Individual Determination (AVID) National Demonstration High School in Minnesota on Friday, April 27.

Sen. Bigham, a Park High School graduate, presented the award to Park High School AVID Coordinators Maria Tol and Nikki McCarty and a class of AVID students, commending them for their work with the program.

“I am very proud of Park High School for their AVID accomplishments. Congratulations to the students and staff for this achievement,” said Sen. Bigham.

A Senate Resolution commending Park High School acknowledges the accomplishments of the school’s AVID program, including its growth from 20 students in 2009 to 260 students in 2018.

AVID is a global, non-profit organization dedicated to closing the achievement gap. AVID teaches students skills and behaviors for academic success and helps develop critical thinking, literacy and math skills.

AVID National Demonstration Schools embrace best practice in both instruction and culture. These schools are known throughout the nation for providing rigorous and appropriate instruction at all levels, to all students. Only 175 schools in the U.S. have been recognized by AVID as providing excellent instruction to all students.
