School Board reviews changes to the 2017-18 calendar and a proposed 2018-19 calendar

After discussing the proposed two day later start for students in grades 1-5, the district is recommending to adjust the later start of two days to an early dismissal in June of two days.

At their regular meeting on May 11, the School Board discussed the changes to the 2017-18 calendar that includes assessment days for grades K-5 prior to the start of the school year on Aug. 22 and 23, with school for students in grades 1-5 beginning on Sept. 5 and for kindergarten students on Sept. 7.

Recent months have included conversations and research around the implications of delaying the start of school for all elementary students. As a district, we are pleased to be moving forward with Literacy Benchmark Assessments (BAS) for all elementary students. The assessment days allow for one to one 30-minute meetings for each student with their teacher before the school year begins. This is an important change as some students haven’t been tested for a full month into the school year previously. This allows teachers to gain a good understanding of the capabilities of every child as they enter the classroom in the fall. The practice has been in place for kindergarten students for many years and this expansion will better serve every elementary student. The effort aligns well with the personalization work of the strategic plan.

The change has been approved by the teacher’s union which has agreed to providing the opportunity for students. Teachers will work with their building principal to develop an assessment schedule for Aug. 22 and 23, and share the online sign-up opportunity with parents (similar to the process that currently occurs for individual student conferences).

The change to the beginning of the year means that the last day of school for elementary students will be June 4, where students in grades 6-11 will be in school through June 6, with senior students attending through June 1 and graduating on June 3.

The School Board reviewed the changes proposed to the 2017-18 calendar and the proposed 2018-19 calendar, with anticipated approval set for Thursday, May 25. Highlights of the two school years are listed below.
