Retiring teacher, Navy Veteran surprised by students

Students and staff surprised Crestview Elementary teacher Mark Haesly on November 10 with a veterans ceremony in his honor. Haesly is a Navy Veteran who served from 1974 to 1980. Haesly has been a physical education teacher at Crestview for 21 years and will be retiring at the end of the year.

“It has been an honor to have Mr. Haesly at Crestview. The students admire him and it is clear to see he feels the same way,” said Jodi Husting, Principal at Crestview.

Students greeted Haesly with a standing ovation as he walked into the ceremony. At the event students read a poem, performed a patriotic song and presented Haesly with artwork of a flag made up of their fingerprints. He was also given an American flag from the American Legion.

“It is so overwhelming, this was the nicest thing anyone has ever done for me,” said Haesly of the surprise.

Haesly has been a teacher for 37 years and got his start in Prescott, WI. He looks forward to spending more time with his wife, children and grandchildren in his retirement.

Schools across the district held events honoring veterans ahead of Veterans Day on November 10, including programs at East Ridge, Park and Woodbury High Schools.
