Raptor Speech Team places at national competition

During the week of June 19, nine East Ridge High School students visited Birmingham, AL for the National Speech and Debate Association tournament, the largest academic competition in the world. During the preliminary rounds, Ben Olson, Lindsay Martin and Jane Ahmann participated in World School’s Debate, Daniel Johnson participated in Congressional Debate, Alex Yang placed top 30 in Domestic Extemporaneous Speaking and Tre’ Edgerton moved forward to the final round of Program of Oral.

Tre’ Edgerton, East Ridge’s first national finalist, was one of only six students in the nation during the final round of Program of Oral Interpretation. He placed fifth and has automatically qualified for next year’s National tournament.

Additionally, Alicia Zhang placed 7th and Kevin Bi placed 9th in the nation in International Extemporaneous Speaking, and Quintin Walker placed 13th in the nation in Humorous Interpretation.

“Due to our team’s great showing at Nationals, East Ridge earned, for the first time ever, the title of National Speech School of Excellence,” said Katie Carslon, East Ridge English teacher and Speech Coach. “We are so proud of these incredible students!”
