Park High School welcomes Sen. Amy Klobuchar for Veterans Day Ceremony

Sen. Amy Klobuchar joined local lawmakers, South Washington County Schools leaders, Park High School staff and students, along with community members in honoring local veterans at the annual Veterans Day Ceremony on Friday, Nov. 9.

During the ceremony, the high school’s band, wind ensemble, concert choir, advanced women’s choir and American Sign Language students performed the national anthem. Senator Klobuchar gave a brief speech, sharing stories of veterans she has met over the years and her friendship with the late Senator John McCain.

“This is a time when we celebrate and also soberly look back on the service of so many,” said Senator Klobuchar.

Park High School Resource Officer Adam Pelton served as a member of the Minnesota Army National Guard. During his service he deployed to Kosvo, Iraq and Croatia. He shared with the school memories of his fellow service members including the story of Sgt. Nicholas Turcotte, who was killed in December 2006.

“Every day I wear a bracelet with his name on it since he died, and I carry him with me,” said Pelton.

He later continued to say, “at the end of the day, it’s not about the mission or all the other noise that comes along with large scale conflict, it’s about the men and women to the left and right of you,and to me that’s family.”

During the ceremony, student Anne Ohmann shared the traits of an American Soldier. The Park Air Force Junior ROTC rifle team also presented the Cost of Freedom Tribute.

Before the ceremony, local veterans were invited to have coffee and socialize with each other and local lawmakers, including Minnesota State Senator Karla Bigham, Cottage Grove Mayor Myron Bailey and St. Paul Park Mayor Sandi Dingle.
