Park High School explores joining new conference, seeks community input

Park High School is a member of the Minnesota State High School League’s Suburban East Conference (SEC) along with the district’s other two high schools, East Ridge and Woodbury. In recent months, Park High School administration has learned of the formation of a new conference and is having preliminary conversations about the possibility of joining that conference and leaving the SEC.

Hastings, Henry Sibley, Hill-Murray, Mahtomedi, North St. Paul, Simley, South St. Paul and Tartan high schools have decided to form a new conference beginning in the 2014-15 school year. These schools have indicated that Park may also be considered as participants in the new conference.

Why is Park High School seeking participation in the new conference?

  • Changing student demographics at Park High School;
  • District and school officials believe this would support increased participation in activities; and
  • The new conference would provide an appropriate competitive balance for all activities.

In order to gain perspective on how the community feels about joining the new conference, the Park High School Activities Department is inviting students, parents and community members to a conversation about Park athletics and activities. The Park High School Community Input Night is scheduled for Monday, July 22, at 7 p.m. in Park’s Lecture Hall (enter through the main entrance and the Lecture Hall is on the left).

The intent of the evening is to gather the community’s input on the merits of considering a change in conference affiliation.

“Our communities have always been very supportive of Park activities,” said Kuemmel. “We want to continue partnering with the community to provide positive experiences for all students of Park High School. The focus remains the same; we will continue to offer high quality, competitive athletics and activities at Park.”

If you are not able to attend this community conversation for Park High School, please send your comments via email to info@sowashco.k12.mn.us no later than Thursday, Aug. 1.
