One Act Plays from two District 833 schools move forward in state competition

One Act Plays produced by Park and Woodbury High Schools will advance in the Minnesota State High School League’s (MSHSL) state competition after performing at the Section 3AA Preliminary Contest.

Park’s production of 26 Pebbles directed by Quinn Forrest Masterson and Lewis D. Youngren and Woodbury’s production of Antigone directed by Marcie Panian Berglund will move on to Section 3AA Finals on Wednesday, Jan. 31 at Simley High School in Inver Grove Heights.

Park’s production is described as a docudrama set in the aftermath of the mass shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, CT in 2012. The playwright, Eric Ulloa, conducted dozens of interviews with Newtown community members to write the play, which debuted in 2013.

“Five years after the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting, the play's relevance could not be timelier, with yet another school shooting last week,” said Lewis Youngren, co-director of 26 Pebbles.

In addition, Youngren’s co-director Quinn Forrest Masterson said, "it has been an incredibly rewarding experience watching the Park theater students grow and take on the responsibility of giving a voice to the community of Newtown, CT.”

Woodbury’s production, Antigone, is a modern adaptation of a tragedy by Sophocles. The play centers on a young woman’s mission to bury one of her two brothers killed in war.

“Woodbury Royal Pride theater kids have worked super hard with challenging material. I was happy to play a part in putting together a classic drama,” said Marcie Panian Berglund, director of Antigone.

Each competition play must run less than 35 minutes and can be of any genre of literature except musical theater, operas or operettas, according to rules posted by the MSHSL.
