Northern Tier donates $15,000 to District 833 high school robotics teams

Northern Tier recently donated $5,000 to each of District 833’s high school robotics teams. The robotics teams at East Ridge, Park and Woodbury high schools are made up of a diverse student body applying the STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) disciplines to design and build complex competition-level robots.

Northern Tier has close ties to the South Washington County Schools community, and a long history supporting STEM programs at local schools throughout the Twin Cities.

Ken Atkinson of the Northern Tier Donation Committee stated, “We intend to be more involved in the robotic programs this fall by volunteering as engineering mentors for building the robots as well as coaching team members in safety practices, product marketing and project management which are key to the teams’ success. The robots for this year’s competition were built earlier this year and are now entering competition.”

In addition, Northern Tier donated to the robotics team at the Math and Science Academy, and donated $7,500 to FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) to support the regional FIRST Robotics Competition at Mariucci Arena on April 7-9. The State of Minnesota High School League recognizes the robotics teams and provides a state competition for the students. The team from East Ridge High School was last year’s state champion.
