Nine students qualify for national speech tournament

Woodbury High School Speech Team

South Washington County Schools is pleased to announce that nine high school students from across the district have qualified for the National Speech and Debate Association’s (NSDA) National Speech Tournament. Three East Ridge High School students and six Woodbury High School students will participate in this year’s tournament.

District 833 is a part of the NSDA’s Central District, which is one of the most competitive districts in the entire country. This year, Woodbury High School students placed first in the Central District.

NSDA is the most prestigious and respected national speech tournament. Students compete within their regional district, and the top speakers qualify for nationals. East Ridge students include Tre’ Edgerton, Tony May and Alex Yang. Woodbury students include Nadia Franzen, Lily Neumann-Drenth, Lily Pieper, Njeri Waitutu, Annie Ward and Stephanie Zhang.

The 2018 national tournament takes place this June in Fort Lauderdale, FL.
