Outgoing Minnesota Education Commissioner Brenda Cassellius visited students at Newport Elementary School on Friday, Jan. 4. Cassellius read the books The Best Pet of All by David LaRochelle and One by Kathryn Otoshi to Ms. Karen Mendez’s kindergarten classroom. She then talked to students about their pets and how to stand-up for themselves and others, the themes from the two books.

The classroom visit is one of Cassellius’ final before leaving her position. She has served as Education Commissioner since 2010, when she was appointed by Governor Mark Dayton. She will be replaced by Mary Cathryn Ricker, who was named as the new Education Commissioner by incoming Governor Tim Walz. Ricker will begin in the role on January 7.

Newport Elementary School serves students in PreK through fifth grades and is committed to ensuring every child reaches their full potential. Newport Elementary has twice been recognized as a school that is "Beating the Odds" by the Minneapolis Star Tribune. The recognition was earned for academic achievement despite barriers typically associated with communities with a high degree of poverty. Newport Elementary School has been recognized for both reading and math achievement.
