Gopher softball player visits Cottage Grove Elementary School

On Tuesday, June 6, U of M softball player Sam Macken visited Kay Youngstrom’s fourth grade classroom at Cottage Grove Elementary. Youngstrom’s students have been following the U’s softball team for some time, and when they learned their teacher knew Macken, they instantly began requesting autographed photos.

Macken, who lives in Rochester, MN, was planning to be in the Woodbury area and stopped for a visit to Mrs. Youngstrom’s classroom. Each student wrote a question for Macken to answer, drew pictures, created a welcome poster and sported their Gopher gear.

During her visit, Macken shared her experience playing softball for the Gophers. She talked about her hard work and dedication to softball, her twice a day, three to four hour long practices and how she balanced her college classes. She then answered students’ questions and demonstrated the proper stance for home run hitting.

"It was great to have Sam speak about her dedication to softball, her studies and how hard work pays off. She even went out to the playground with us and hit a few balls so the kids could run the bases,” said Youngstrom. “The highlight of the visit was the autographed photos she brought for all the students. She even signed yearbooks, hats, t-shirts and notebooks!”

Macken graduated in May with a degree in marketing and a minor in sports management.
