East Ridge senior receives prestigious technology award

East Ridge High School senior Kate Sawyer recently visited Target’s Headquarters in Minneapolis where she was presented with the TWIST EPIC Award. Sawyer is one of only 25 young women who were selected and invited to this ceremony.

The TWIST (Target Women in Science and Technology) Award honors young women in the Twin Cities for their dedication to science, technology, engineering and mathematics. These young women demonstrate engagement, passion, innovation and curiosity within these fields and TWIST encourages them to continue pursuing this path.

Sawyer is the captain of the East Ridge robotics team and was nominated by Doug Jensen, head mentor for the team, for her dedication to the STEM field.

“Kate is a leader in our school. Watching her lead and help coordinate the various responsibilities of the robotics team is nothing short of amazing,” said Joel Olson, Activities Director at East Ridge High School. “The number of kids and adults she works with to help make the program a success, shows a maturity well beyond her years. We are very fortunate to have Kate share her gifts and talents with us.”

Sawyer is a mentor for a middle school robotics team at Lake Middle School and she and her sister Anna put together a summer STEM camp for local elementary school students.

Beyond her work with STEM, Sawyer is a varsity public forum debater, Cross Country athlete, National Honor Society member. She is also involved with the youth council at Guardian Angles and Relay for Life.
