East Ridge Debate Team members qualify for national competition

Two of East Ridge High School’s Debate Team members have earned a chance to compete at the National Speech and Debate tournament in Ft. Lauderdale this summer.

Jane Ahmann, received a perfect score, and Mark Salnikov received first place honors for their competitions at the Central MN National Speech and Debate Association’s Congressional Debate National Qualifier.

Thirteen East Ridge students took part in the competition at the Minnesota House of Representatives on Nov. 8. Ten of those students finished in the top 10 for their work including: Jane Ahmann (1st place), Mark Salnikov (1st place), Lindsay Martin (2nd place), Mridula Arun (3rd place), KV Do (4th place), Amy Guo (5th place), Joanna Chen (6th place), Clare McIntyre (8th place) and Sam Padmanabhan (8th place).

The team won the Central Minnesota Congressional Sweepstakes for their performance.

Katie M. Scholz, coach of the speech and debate team said, "I'm incredibly proud of the hard work that they put into preparing for this tournament. It definitely paid off!"

Ahmann and Salnikov will compete at the National Speech and Debate tournament in Florida in June 2018.
