District 833 Announces the Selection of Nuevas Fronteras Spanish Immersion Principal

District 833 is pleased to announce that Cynthia Maldonado has accepted the position of Nuevas Fronteras Spanish Immersion principal.

Maldonado has almost 20 years of experience in education, including 15 years of experience at Park Spanish Immersion in St. Louis Park, MN.  She is fully bilingual and will work to make sure that students and staff are immersed in Spanish throughout the day at Nuevas Fronteras. Maldonado most recently served as the principal at Stowe Elementary School in Duluth, MN where she put focus on continuous improvement and emphasized the idea of a growth mindset for students, staff and herself.

Of the selection, Assistant Superintendent Julie Nielsen said, “Cynthia’s passion and love for immersion was evident throughout the interview process. Her extensive background and ability to speak fluently in Spanish will provide for solid leadership as we transition Nuevas Fronteras to a new location.”

Throughout her teaching experience, she held several leadership roles including as Lead Building Instructional Leader, Equity/Diversity Leader, Professional Development Leader, Grade level Team Leader, and Curriculum Adoption Committee Leader at the District Level. In addition, along with her commitment to instructional excellence, she recognizes the importance of the social/emotional needs of the student and their overall well-being. She is committed to creating a school culture and educational program that helps students thrive both in school and in life.

Of the opportunity, Maldonado said, “I am thrilled to have the opportunity to join the Nuevas Fronteras team! I absolutely love and believe in immersion education and cannot wait to work with the wonderful teachers, parents and staff at NFSI. South Washington County Schools has such an authentic, welcoming culture and I can't wait to get started!"

Maldonado holds a bachelor’s degree in elementary education, a Master of Education and is currently pursuing her doctoral degree in educational leadership at Bethel University in St. Paul, MN. She received her Principal’s Licensure at Hamline University.

Maldonado will assume her role as the Spanish Immersion principal effective Monday, July 24. She will work alongside Jodi Husting at Crestview/Nuevas Fronteras Elementary School to oversee the transition of the Spanish Immersion school to its new location, beginning in the fall of 2018.
