Mary Virgin has been selected as an “Excellent Educator” by WCCO. Virgin is a teacher at Cottage Grove Elementary School. Nominated by an anonymous community member, Virgin was surprised with the award by reporter Kim Johnson in her classroom on Thursday, Oct. 25.

Virgin teaches reading recovery one-on-one with first-grade students in the morning and teaches a third-grade classroom in the afternoon. She says she loves the work she does with students to grow their reading skills.

“Reading takes you to so many different places,” said Virgin. “I just know there are children who don’t like to read and it is because they haven’t found the right book yet.”

“Mary is such a passionate, dedicated teacher. She looks at every child individually and finds a way for that student to shine,” said Cottage Grove Elementary Principal Theresa Blume-Thole.

“Excellent Educator” is a weekly segment on WCCO that highlights teachers making a difference. You can see the full story here.
