Community donates and builds new playground at Newport Elementary School

Students at Newport Elementary School will have more ways to play outside when they return to school in September, thanks to community businesses and volunteers who donated and installed new playground equipment on Saturday, June 9.

Dozens of volunteers from MidWestOne Bank and Midwest Playscapes, as well as school and community members teamed up to install some of the new playground equipment. The project includes the replacement of four swings, along with the addition of four swings, a jungle gym, a Merry Go Round and other features. Over the summer, a Gaga Ball Pit will be also added to the playground and basketball hoops will be replaced.

“The goal is to engage as many students as possible during recess time. We are thankful for the support of the businesses and volunteers who made this happen for our kids,” said Newport Elementary Principal Rich Romano.

MidWestOne Bank contributed $15,000 to add new playground equipment for the school. Midwest Playscapes, Bailey Nurseries and South Washington County Schools also contributed money and supplies for the effort. Subway also donated meals for the volunteers during the equipment installation event.
