Caldecott Medal-winning author Dan Santat visits Crestview Elementary School

Dan Santat, a Caldecott Medal winner and New York Times-bestselling author, visited Crestview Elementary School on Oct. 9. He is the author and illustrator of several children’s books including The Adventures of Beekle: The Unimaginary Friend and Are We There Yet? His stop at Crestview focused on his new book about overcoming fears, After the Fall: How Humpty Dumpty Got Back Up Again.

Santat read two of his books for students of Crestview and Nuevas Fronteras Spanish Immersion School. He shared his journey to becoming an author and illustrator, inspired students to never give up on their dreams and showed how simple shapes can be used to make drawing easier.

“It is exciting for students to meet and learn from someone as talented and passionate about their work as Dan Santat,” said Julie Rae Johnson, Reading Specialist at Crestview. “I hope students are inspired to read more and express themselves through the arts because of Dan’s example.”

Santat took time to meet with teachers and sign books before the event and left behind a drawing of Beekle, the main character in his award-winning book The Adventures of Beekle.
