Construction of the new Oltman Middle School building is expected to be completed on time, allowing students to begin classes at the school in the fall of 2018. The new building is located at 6625 Goodview Ave. S. in Cottage Grove.

Teaching space in the building will feature a pod design that allows each grade level to be housed in its own two-story section of the building. Within the pods each classroom, except the science classroom, will have a moveable wall that can open to a collaborative learning space. The building will also include a large cafeteria, kitchen, auditorium, music suite, gym, fitness center, locker rooms, pool and administrative space.

Once completed, the new Oltman Middle School will accommodate as many as 1,100 students. Depending on future growth, there is the possibility for a future expansion to increase capacity for as many as 1,300 students.

The School Board purchased a 57-acre parcel of land in 2016. Located in the northwest corner of Cottage Grove, the land is adjacent to the city boundaries of Newport and St. Paul Park and approximately a half mile south of the Woodbury and Cottage Grove border.

Overall, the cost of the project is under budget due to a competitive bid environment, constructability of the school design, economic material choice and efficient construction management.

The current Oltman Middle School building, located at 1020 Third St. in St. Paul Park, will be repurposed as Nuevas Fronteras Spanish Immersion Elementary School starting in the fall of 2018.

Videos of the construction and design process of the new Oltman Middle School are available online. Construction updates are regularly presented at School Board meetings. The most recent update was on July 26.
