District 833 Meets Requirements for Managing Asbestos

South Washington County Schools is required by the EPA to maintain a plan for managing all building materials that contain asbestos. The District is in full compliance with the Asbestos Hazard Emergency Response Act, and inspects all materials for damage every six months. The District also performs a major quantitative re-inspection every three years, per EPA rules.

During the summer of 2018, District 833 conducted asbestos abatements at Royal Oaks Elementary and Pullman Elementary in conjunction with replacing windows and doors at these buildings, and also in Nuevas Fronteras SI Elementary in conjunction with a large construction project. All work was performed by a Minnesota Department of Health licensed abatement contractor and followed all State and Federal required air monitoring requirements.

Please note that the presence of asbestos in a school does not endanger the health of building occupants. It is our policy to work closely with our environmental consultant regarding the maintenance or removal of all asbestos-containing materials in the District.

Asbestos projects will also occur during the 2018-2019 school year and next summer as construction projects dictate. Details on the locations, condition, and type of asbestos-containing materials and copies of building management plans are available at each building and at the District Office. Please feel free to direct any questions about asbestos or any safety issue to Wendy German, Health & Safety  at 651-425-6313.
